We are constantly aware of the impact on the environment when managing a nursery. Its only when you stop, take a few steps back and study, what are the possible effects on the environment that you realise there are many.
The pursuit of increased profits, the drive to be more competitive, to grab that extra trade. In general, running any business involves all of these, they all have an adverse impact on the environment. Here is how we see it.
Summer bedding plants were always planted out from early June through to mid-July. Now supermarket along with large garden centre chains have dragged this forward to late April, to early. This means production starts six to eight weeks earlier, in the short cold days of winter. We start much later taking advantage of extra natural light and heat, reducing our carbon footprint, using less chemical, water and time. This scenario applies to almost all ornamental crops grown for retail plant sales. We grow with natures natural seasons, it is the only way for us, it is great for our customers as your plants should survive and thrive when planted, it also reduces the impact on the environment.
